In ten years, Jens Lekman has established himself as one of indie pop’s finest. Combining orchestral pop elements (that means trumpets, horns, strings, back-up singers, doo-wop, and all), Lekman’s songs are either love letters to the ladies of his dreams or depictions of things in every day life.
“This has of course nothing to do with anything/ I just get so nervous when talking with you,” Lekman sings in Kanske Ar Jag Kar I Dig, Jens Lekman is one of the few that can ramble, so much sing about nothing and still be charming. Compared to the styles of Jonathan Richman to Belle and Sebastian, “I was slicing up an avocado/ When you came up behind me,” Lekman’s simplicity is his forte.
His songs are about every day life, with a little bit of love squeezed in; it’s cheesiness and cleverness that boosts adoration. Appropriate for record players, or jukebox, it’s best experienced live. It’s noted that within the past decade of performing, Lekman has “honed his live show to perfection, creating a set that is a raucous party and a gentle embrace, exuberantly silly and quietly moving.”
Jens Lekman will be here, full band and all, on November 12th with GvB II veteran Taken By Trees. We’re expecting a lot of swooning and swaying that night, see you there.
