Born from fire, and sculpted by bits and pieces of mechanical materials…this humanoid we call new fumes fell from the sky with harmonies, melodies, and be-bob notions spewing out deep from inside his blood pumping heart. Though some may not understand, the majorities who have connected with him understand the true nature of what new fumes gives us, and that something is a “gift” that we all can enjoy in a unique way every single time we witness his art. I may sound over exaggerated but if you have witnessed a new fumes show in the past you too will understand the meaning of what I mean…or better yet it may re kindle that art value deep within you.

To me, watching new fumes perform is like watching a very intimate spirit dance. Trust me next time you go to a new fumes show watch and see how he moves and how handles his instruments. Throughout the set Daniel Huffman, AKA new fumes, is doing some kind of spirit pedal dance. Very delicate in his steps he is able to control and manipulate his sounds with a touch of a toe. Being a one man band, it’s incredible to watch as he swiftly moves from pedal to pedal, keyboard to computer, guitar to keys all done like I said in a form of what looks like a delicate beautiful spirit dance. With such a diverse style, new fumes is able to put you a sensory deprivation state where you mind and body is relaxed, but too much forced deprivation can cause anxiety or hallucinations, so to snap you out he gently steps up the heat with catchy, upbeat riffs to get your body moving. Though I don’t know, some may just want to stay in a hallucinated state…Last time I saw new fumes I looked over and there was this mirror and inside the mirror was new fumes playing and at that moment everything just seemed right and beautiful.

Imaginative, breathtaking, transcendental, indescribable, and goes good with tacos?!?! These are just a few words of what people see new fumes as, and if you have seen him live before than you too will be in utter awe of his performance. The first time I ever heard new fumes; I honestly did not know what to expect…I kept seeing his name pop up on amazing bills and took the leap to go see a new fumes show. After that day my mind was blown, and yours will too once you have witness what he has to share.

Now it’s time to get personal with the man himself with questions from some of his fans:

I ask: How did you get the name “New Fumes” or really what does it mean?
A: I was working a job where this dude and I did nothing but paint things white for like 3 weeks straight. He was kindof this older hippy dude with a funny high pitched voice and you could kinda tell he had probably done a few too many hits of acid back in the day. So, at some point he stopped painting and started mixing things like latex paint, spray paint, paint thinner and all these other chemicals in this 5 gallon bucket… I don’t know why. I just remember trying to not take deep breaths while I worked, and I watched him stir this concoction. I remember him saying with his funny, high pitched voice where he would whistle on the S… “Man, there’s some new fumes up in here”. It made me laugh and it just kinda stuck with me.Beyond that, it can have many meanings. That’s up to the audience.

Nick asks: Is the goat your spirit animal, I’m sure some people wonder what’s up with the sick mask?
A: I like goats, but I like all animals.
I would not say the goat is my spirit animal. The mask came from a friend of mine that collects masks. He also gave me a cat mask I used to wear for the first year or so that I was doing New Fumes. I like the goat mask because its light weight and can sit on top of my head. It also has a cool shape! People will sometimes come up to me talking about Satan and all this pagan mythology stuff I know nothing about. There is no intended meaning behind me wearing that mask, just a more interesting thing to look at than the top of my head.

I ask: What’s been the craziest moment you’ve had playing a show??
A: Man, that’s tough. I don’t know. What does crazy mean here? There is funny crazy, painful crazy, crazy crazy…

Jeanine asks: What are your inspirations for your music, and what did you listen to growing up?
A : That’s a big question… Or it requires a big answer. A quick answer would be: Peter, Paul and Mary was my first concert. My second concert was Michael Jackson. The Disney soundtracks to Peter and the Wolf and Song of the South stand out as some of the first music I remember hearing when I was a toddler.

The first rock music to really move me was The Rolling Stones. My mom was really in to Neil Young and Leonard Cohen, I liked that stuff too. I became a music sponge and just sought it out in all forms. I didn’t discriminate much. I could never get in to Eurasure though, they kinda bugged me.

The SST label was pretty awesome with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, fireHose, Black Flag etc. All that stuff made me get all pumped up for skateboarding. After I injured myself and had to quit skating, playing music seemed like the natural thing to spend my time on.
maybe I am influenced by everything I hear, good or bad.

I ask: Can you give me a personal childhood moment when you knew that music lived inside your heart? (Could be anything, a road trip with family listening to AC/DC, sitting on a swing humming a song in your head….)
A : Well, I was pummeled with The Rolling Stones on family road trips. Also a lot of Beach Boys, Doors, Willie Nelson + Jimi Hendrix.

In middle school I discovered heavy metal, punk rock and industrial music all at once pretty much. I was a skate boarding nut and skaters are natural adventurist explorers I think. I found out about a lot of music from skateboarding. The first time I heard Dinosaur Jr. And Firehose were in skate videos. My mind was blown. I think songs from those bands were major turning points. I distinctly remember hearing Metallica’s Master of Puppets, Fugazi’s 13 songs, Dinosaur jr’s song “Freak Scene” and Firehose’s “brave Captain” and feeling like music gets me pumped up and makes me skateboard faster and better. It was so powerful.

Later, I got into the Cure’s album called “Kiss me kiss me kiss me”… That’s when I really started thinking, “maybe I can be in a band and make dreamy, weird music. Robert Smith is kind-of a bad singer and its cool… The pressure’s off”. I was a JR. in HS when I saw The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr play at Trees in Dallas. That night I went home and decided to really learn how to play guitar, I was so inspired. I never really learned to play all that well, but I am still trying.

Tara Asks: What’s it like living in a dome house, it’s got to play some kind of mind games with you?
A: I love living in a dome! I don’t know why people keep building cheap boxes for people to live in. Domes make so much more sense. A monolithic dome can take a direct hit from an F5 tornado. Domes are energy efficient and use less materials to build…WTF. I do like recording in the dome, that’s for sure. Ha!

Kelsey asks: What was it like being able to play Yoshimi in full with the flaming lips? Can you give a specific moment when it kind of seemed surreal?
A: I’m glad I’m able to play anything, but playing those songs was fun. A dream come true in a way. A nightmare in a way, haha! It was challenging and exciting. An honor. I think we were playing “In The Morning Of The Magicians” when I kind of stepped back and was like “wow, this is weird… This is happening… This is fun, what a trip.” I had time to think that because I wasn’t playing very much. I love that song.

Chance Asks: What drives you to do music…like is it pain or life experiences or just for the love of music?
A: I have to play music. I don’t have a choice. I love it. Something drives me to do it, I don’t know what. I’d go mad without it. It does seem to be a pain killer/ anti depressant for me at times, yes. It’s also a way of saying things that are unspeakable, a way to express a mood or tell a story, yes. Music is a magical wonderful thing, yes.

Billy asks: What are your influences for your new album?
A: Man, it’s all over the place.
I did not want to make something reminiscent of any other bands. I was expressing ideas and experimenting with my tools.I got on a big Kraut Rock kick again last year, so that crept in there some. There are some funk and dance elements there. Some of the songs were recorded right after the last record came out and some were recorded a month ago… So, a lot can happen in two years. I just keep fucking with sounds and music until something emerges, usually.

We all ask: We are really excited to hear what’s next for New Fumes, what’s the future looking like for you…music etc.?
A: I don’t know. Keep on going! I hope this Stone Roses cover album with the Lips gets done soon. I thought I was done with my second album, but I realize I have some more work to do. so hopefully, that will come out before toooo long. I would like to tour more.

On Sunday, April 28, local vendors will team up to host a benefit concert to raise funds for those affected by the recent tragedy in West, Texas. Presented by the AT&T Performing Arts Center, the event will feature performances by Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights, a brief set of solo acoustic songs by Toadies lead singer Vaden Todd Lewis, The O’s, Somebody’s Darling and Goodnight Ned.

Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) has partnered with organizers to create the “Texans for West Fund”. All proceeds for the concert will be deposited with the Foundation. Using guidance from CFT leadership, benefit creators will choose non profits whose missions are to serve areas in West Texas to provide basic needs including food, clothing, shelter and counseling services.

“Our hearts certainly go out to those affected by the devastation in the town of West,” said Doug Curtis, president and acting CEO of the AT&T Performing Arts Center. “The Center’s mission is about building strong communities, and we’re pleased to be able to help our neighbors to the south get West back on its feet again.”

Additional event partners include Goodfriend Beer Garden & Burger House, Granada Theater, Kessler Theater, House of Blues, Homegrown Fest, Club Dada, The Door and Good Records. There will also be an on-site silent auction to raise more funds for the cause.

Dallas’ celebrated hometown boys, The Toadies, have a big surprise in store. Come to Sundown at Granada’s rooftop for a special premiere of their brand spanking new music video, “Rattlers Revival”, as well as behind-the-scenes   footage.  That’s right.  You’ll have a chance to see all the hard work and creativity that went into this project.

This special event will take place on Tuesday, May 7^th, from 8-10:00 pm. The bartenders will be slinging drink specials, prizes will be handed out, and an acoustic performance from the Toadies’ own Vaden Todd Lewis could happen.  But the only way you’re going to be able to find out is if you come.

The video was directed by Dallas’ own Justin Wilson who has directed videos for the Riverboat Gamblers, True Widow and Nervous Curtains.  Justin’s foray into music videos dates back to his high school years and since then has dedicated himself to creating music videos and album teasers for some of Texas’ best bands. He’s always got his hand in something; recent film credits include Bad Kids Go To Hell (editor) & Filmage: The Story of Descendents/All (Director of Photography/Editor), while commercial credits include American Airlines, Neiman Marcus & Vans shoes.

The event is free, so don’t bother dishing out excuses on why not to go.  Just show up and join the party! Tuesday May 7^th, the rooftop of Sundown at Granada.  We’ll have some free passes to Granada shows, Homegrown Fest & the Wildflower Music Festival!  Plus specialty Toadies themed cocktails The Rattler & The SnakeBite!  The whole Kirtland Records crew will be on hand, so come out and celebrate!

The Sundown at Granada has teamed up with Red Bull to host a roof top screening of the 1986 boss ass  film Top Gun, April 23 at 9 p.m., to support Dallas signups for the Red Bull Flugtag competition.  With Val Kilmer in town who knows who will be there?

The rooftop will open at 8pm and seating is 1^st come 1^st serve.  If you were at our Spaceballs screening, you know it will.  This time we will also be showing the movie in the bar for overflow crowd that gets there late.

We can’t wait for Red Bull Flugtag.  The first national competition is located in five major U.S. cities, Dallas/Ft.Worth being one of them! Getting Texans pumped and ready to fly or die, the Sundown at Granada will be screening Top Gun on the rooftop patio April 23 at 9 p.m. This will be the first place in Dallas that entrants can sign up for the competition and apply to fly! Teams will be selected by early July and the event will take place at Lake Carolyn, Las Colinas on Sept 21.

Red Bull Flugtag is an event where competitors with dreams of duplicating the Wright brothers attempt to pilot homemade flying…or not…machines for as long as possible. Specifically 30 fearless pilots will be selected to launch their self-built human-powered flying machines off a 30-foot high ramp into the waters below. Participants will have themed flugtags with corresponding costumes and skits. Flyers will be judged on three important criteria: Distance – this is a flying completion after all, Creativity of craft- Red Bull likes to reward genius, Showmanship- standing ovations are always good.

Ishi was born as an experiment between friends. JT Mudd & Brad Dale set out to create a sound that would help redefine the pop sensibility of modern day music. Their vision was to blend the classic, soulful story-telling and organic instrumentation of traditional folk music, with the infinite sonic possibilities offered through electronic production. Experimentation quickly evolved into a journey of sound that ultimately lead to the songs on Ishi’s debut, Through the Trees, released May 2010.

Ishi’s ability to successfully walk the line between an ambitious studio act and a multi-sensory live experience allows them to engage their audiences in an uplifting celebration of life. High-energy dance floors combined with the subtle undertones of inner-exploration combine to create a concert experience that is unequivocally one-of-a-kind. Each night, Ishi intends to create an entirely unique environment of mysticism, awareness, and love. On Digital Wounds, the band collaborated for a second time with acclaimed artist James Marsh, who designed the album art for experimental UK band Talk Talk. The new record was spawned out of their deep love for John Lennon & Michael Jackson. The band was able to mix down their record on a console that Michael Jackson owned & used for the record Bad. The live elements consist of James Mudd & Rocky Ottley. James Mudd, the brother of JT Mudd, plays drums & has shared his programming & songwriting skills to the record. Rocky Ottley, a UNT graduate, plays guitar & sings live. He’s a gifted multi-instrumentalist that brings all facets of the musical wheel to the team.

On October 12th of 2012, Ishi experienced a dream come true by opening for the legendary New Wave band New Order. They’ve been listed as one of the top 5 artists in North Texas of 2012 by Pegasus News. In 2010 the band won ‘Best New Act’ & ‘Best Electronic/Dance Act’ & in 2011 ‘Best Electronic/Dance Act’ by the Dallas Observer.

Today, Ishi continues to tour the country in support of their soon-to-be-released sophomore album, Digital Wounds. They have appeared at major festivals such as SXSW, Meltdown Music Festival, & Wicker Park Festival. They continue to share the stage with some of the most widely known and respected Indie and Dance acts on the touring circuit. Ishi’s highly anticipated second album, Digital Wounds, will be released nationwide Spring 2013.
