Natasha Leggero is an L.A. comedienne known for her combination of a glamorous style with a daringly catty attitude.  Think Daniel Tosh, but he’s a cute girl with expensive tastes.  Leggero represents herself as a 21st century Dorothy Parker. She takes aim at topics like pop culture, the separation of classes, and the less-than-kosher aspects of everyday life… and fires away with a unique blend of classy and coarse wit.  Natasha swipes her claws at anything and anyone, and she’s definitely a comic on the edge.  She spends her summers at a beach house on the edge.  She gets her mail forwarded to the edge.

Her album, Coke Money, tackles topics like gold-digging, reality TV, toilet babies, Jersey Shore, and gang culture.  The Album has been in the top 10 on iTunes since it’s debut in March 2011.  Her twitter feed is also a goldmine, filled with the sort of social critiques Oscar Wilde might make if he lived on a diet of Sex and the City and Forever 21.  After all, Leggero has a B.A. in Theater Criticism, so she’s used to having a calculated opinion.  This happens to be how she began her career as a stand-up, as Leggero puts it, “I just saw someone talking about LA onstage, and I was like, ‘Oh, I can just get up onstage and kind of critique what I see around me and what’s happening, in the same way I did with the plays in New York.’ And, so, I tried it once, and it really worked, so I just kept doing it.”  Here’s a clip of her stand-up:

Her Criticism background also surely helped her feel right at home judging on Last Comic Standing.  She also stars in Comedy Central’s new hit animated series Ugly Americans, is a frequent panelist on Chelsea Lately, and appears regularly in Are You There, Chelsea? and Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time.  Check out a hilarious clip from Pretend Time:

Nurses, the Portland-based psych pop trio are coming to the Granada on Tuesday with Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks! Their most recent album, Dracula, released in 2011 on Dead Oceans Records is definitely worth a listen. Dracula was primarily recorded in isolation during a month long stay on the Oregon coast. They had nothing else to do but make seriously awesome music. The isolation, muggy woods and winter darkness all crept into the album in various ways. After returning to society, the band handed over their cabin creation to Scott Colburn who also engineered Animal Collective’s Feels and Strawberry Jam and Arcade Fire’s Funeral. Children in our local neighborhoods will benefit with gardening camps and low cost/high nutrition cooking classes from the proceeds of this benefit brunch and silent auction.  The Promise of Peace, (POP), Community Garden Farm to Table Brunch and Silent Auction will be held on March 4^th at Sundown at Granada from 10:30am – 2:00pm.  It will feature local Chefs Rolo Cantu, Marc Cassel, Billy Cooper, Suzanne Fries and Sundown at Granada’s Chef Patrick Stark. The chefs have designed a stunning five-course menu that will deliver local goodness to your pallet as you experience the remarkable ambiance at the new Sundown at Granada, beer garden and restaurant which was recently opened by Mike Schoder. Greenlings will be donating local produce that follows the restaurant’s mission to serve locally grown ingredients in their unique menu.  This brunch will get some local love on your plate in a most eloquent fashion.  A brand new brunch menu from Sundown at Granada is slated for April.

Tickets are $60 and include a five-course menu, a specialty cocktail and gratuity.  There are only 50 tickets available.  Purchase your tickets at granadatheater.com.  The silent auction will open at 10:30am. The gritty English trio Band of Skulls craft bluesy and ballsy slabs of atmospheric indie rock that echo the work of contemporaries like the Kills, Duke Spirit, and the Black Keys. Formed by Russell Marsden (guitar and vocals), Emma Richardson (bass and vocals), and Matt Hayward (drums).

Reviews are raving about the long anticipated album, PasteMagazine.com went as far as to say ”The bottom-line is that these guys do what they do very, very well. Sweet Sour, their sophomore full-length, is torn almost evenly between spacious ballads and ass-smashing rock, and there isn’t much of a low-point to be found.’

‘They’ve mastered the art of heavy music with raw energy and lyrical complexity, as shown through the song “sweet sour” itself. This kind of track is prevalent on the album and will no doubt make Band Of Skulls followers feel at home. All this Band of Skulls talk only gets me more excited for their visit to Granada Theater Saturday, March 17th.  They haven’t made their way to Texas since SXSW two years ago, so mark your calenders and come give them a Texas sized welcome.

OH LAND

Oh Land bb (real name Nanna) first came into my life Spring of 2011. It was after SXSW and this little Danish girl was opening up for synth-pop legends OMD. I had done a little research on her and was immediately hooked on her playful, catchy songs. Her Fleet Foxes cover was especially awesome. Needless to say, I was excited for her set. The room wasn’t even half full when Oh Land came out but she performed as if it were a full house. You could tell it was her first major tour as she was a little shy, a little awkward. But her charm and voice powered through. She smiled. She closed her eyes while she danced as if she was feeling the beats. I was in love. She came through later that year opening for Sia and the crowd was much bigger. I was proud of my bb. She grew right before our eyes. Miss her and can’t wait to see her again.

Zahira Gutierrez (Wild Moccasins)

I met Zahira just this past Saturday night when Wild Moccasins opened up for Octopus Project (Yvonne is on the list later). This was Wild Mocs first time playing Dallas but Zahira didn’t seem nervous at all. It didn’t take very long for Zahira and the boys to win over the crowd. Sounding like a mix of Black Kids & Givers, their set was energetic & fun. Zahira bb did it all. She sang. She danced. She “jimmy-jangled”. She played the synth. And her smile was contagious. You couldn’t help but smile & dance watching. I was brave enough to talk to the group after their set. Nice kids and Zahira was just as lovely off stage as she was electric on it. They’ll be at 35 Denton and I can’t wait to see Zahira again.

Alexandra Lawn (Ra Ra Riot)

Oh Ali BB. We’ve had Ra Ra Riot many, many times at Granada and she is always looking beautiful. Anyone who is a fan of Ra Ra Riot loves the strings and Ali’s contributions sound absolutely wonderful both on record & live. She recently left the band so I don’t know if we’ll ever see her again. Here’s to hoping Ali goes SOLO and comes visit us again in Dallas!

Kathy Foster (The Thermals)

The Thermals played to a small crowd at Granada a couple of years back. We were bummed because we love The Thermals but selfishly we were happy to get a nice spot to crush on Kathy BB. Yeah, it’s kind of a cliche to fall for the “hot chick bass player” but Kathy is much cooler than that. Her smile, her spirit, her attitude, and her bass licks is an important part of The Thermals music. Live, she’s a joy to watch. What a talent! After the show, I snagged a show poster and somehow got backstage and asked The Thermals for their autograph. To my happyness, Kathy signed the poster with a heart. TRUE STORY. Ohhh Kathy swoon.

Neko Case

Everyone loves Neko. Whether its with New Pron or solo, Neko always shines when she’s on stage. However my Neko story has cemented Neko’s place in my heart forever. When Neko played Granada in 2009, I was so giddy. I had been crushing on her for years and had yet to see her live. Plus I was collecting signatures on my ukulele and was damn sure going to get Neko’s autograph (maybe a lipstick kiss!). After the show I raced to the backstage area (I’m a lucky duck) and asked the band to sign the uke. As they passed it around, I made small talk with the drummer but all I was thinking about was Neko signing the ukulele. When it came to her, she glanced at me, smiled a little smile and started signing. She might have said something to me but my head was spinning too much to even remember. She handed me back my ukulele and thanked me for coming to the show. In between the ukulele strings she wrote “LOVE NEKO”. D’awwwwwwwwww.

Alexis Krauss (Sleigh Bells)

Who doesn’t love “Sexi Lexi”. She is an absolute force of nature when she is on stage. My ears are still ringing from that Sleigh Bells show last year. Many were calling it the best Granada show of 2011. With a backdrop of Marshall Amps and bright red lights, Alexis blew the roof of the place. If you were down up front, you probably left her set drench in sweat. It was a workout. After the show the band was kind enough to hang out in the lobby and sign autographs. A few lucky gents were able to get a picture with Lexi. I was not one … come back soon Lexi BB!

Victoria Legrand (Beach House)

We LOVE Beach House. 2010 was such a magical time and the year started off great when Beach House released Teen Dream. Victoria’s sultry voice is delightful live. Great songs to slow dance to. She is also cool as hell. Stayed after her set all night to sign autographs and take pictures. Would love to have you back here Victoria!

Lauren Larson(UME)

If you haven’t seen UME yet, what is wrong with you? The Austin trio puts on one of the best live shows around. Think The Joy Formidable but Lauren Larson totally puts Ritzy Bryan to shame. You cannot help but keep your eyes on Lauren during an UME show. It’s all blonde hair, long legs, and guitar solos. So happy to see them at Homegrown Fest. See you soon LL BB

Sharin Foo (The Raveonettes)

Another Dane. Another chick who plays bass. The Raveonettes are one of the coolest bands around and no one is quite as cool as Sharin BB.

Akiko Matsuura (The Big Pink)

I don’t even know if she is still with the band or not but holy crap. She was The Big Pink’s drummer and one of the most gorgeous girls I’ve ever seen on stage. Silent, never really smiled, but a great drummer and a total babe. Aki BB

A lot of people hear the name Stephen Malkmus, and think Stephen who? Well if you throw in that he was the guitarist/lead singer of Pavement people then start to get excited. Even better news is that Pavement’s very own Stephen Malkmus, better known as Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, will be performing in Dallas here at the Granada along side with Nurses. 

After Pavement’s reunion in 2010,  for their 20 year anniversary, Pavement called it quits for good. This didn’t mark the end of SM’s career, but a start of a new chapter.

With Pavement no longer together, Stephen focused more on his solo career, and  has already released multiple albums including Real Emotional Trash (2008),  Face the Truth (2005), and  their newest album Mirror Traffic (2011).  Spin magazine  gave the album, Mirror Traffic, a score of 8/10, calling it, “a patient, inviting album that feels like a fresh start from a guy whose recording career spans multiple boom-and-bust cycles, both for indie rock and the economy.”  To add to this legendary album Stephen Malkmus worked with Beck who produced Mirror Traffic.  Their newest single, Tigers, which is the first track off their new album Mirror Traffic is a playful song  that according to SM it is his “70s British, Nick Lowe-y pop song” and the video kindly educates us on the beautiful creature the Tiger.  ”We are the tigers, we need separate rooms,  we are so divided, let us in, change is all we need to improve.”  With that said I know what you are doing this month….seeing Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks at  Granada Feb. 21, tickets are on sale for $22.
